Couple complete their family with blastocyst technique
Following a vasectomy reversal, Trevor was optimistic he and his wife, Stella would get pregnant and fulfil their dream of a family together. Unfortunately after trying for several years the couple still weren’t conceiving.
"Realising that IVF was our only option we went to a clinic in London and underwent four attempts at IUI, a process that involves sperm being injected into my uterus," explains Stella.
"On the fourth attempt, I got pregnant with twins but tragically had a miscarriage at ten weeks. We were completely devastated. It was a very difficult time for us.
"I just wanted a baby and it was as if the future had been taken away. If you want a baby, nothing else fulfils that desire. I would tell everybody not to give up."
"We made the decision to switch clinic and go locally to Bourn Hall. On our very first consultation we were advised that given our history we should go for ICSI with sperm retrieval, which is where a single sperm is injected directly into a prepared egg. It was also recommended that we tried blastocyst transfer. This is where the embryo is allowed to develop for 5-6 days after fertilisation, giving the embryo a greater chance of success."
"Incredibly it worked and I fell pregnant with twin girls. After eight years of trying for a baby, we finally had our precious girls, Daisy and Lulu.
"It was a rollercoaster," recalls Trevor, "with huge ups and really deep lows. I have got two grown up children from a previous marriage but I was so desperate to have a family with Stella. The joy of having the girls is the most amazing feeling. We feel a complete family now."
