Bourn Hall Clinic

Peter and James Arrowsmith (1986)

AFTER six years trying for a baby Barbara Arrowsmith was left exasperated with doctors who kept telling her there was nothing wrong with her fertility.

The couple tried to get used to the idea that they might never have their own children. But doctors also suggested in vitro fertilisation (IVF) - a new technique at the time. So the Arrowsmiths turned to Bourn Hall clinic where they knew IVF pioneers Patrick Steptoe and Bob Edwards had had great success treating infertile couples.

"I met both Steptoe and Edwards," said Barbara. "It was a real honour. They were both really nice."
